A Companion to James Joyce Ulysses is a Case Study in Contemporary Criticism differs from the other volumes in the Case Studies series because it does not reprint the text of the work under consideration.
The length of Ulysses—one of the “big” books among the classics, with 644 pages in the Gabler edition—makes its inclusion impractical. Instead, this volume—with its various introductory discussions of Joyce, Ulysses, and contemporary criticism and its critical essays about the novel—can usefully supplement whatever edition of the work is being read. There is, in effect, no “definitive” edition of Ulysses. Joyce’s text had a difficult birth: typed by friends when paid typists objected to its obscenity, published by a kindly bookseller who permitted the author to make endless changes and corrections, and printed by French printers daunted by highly experimental prose in a foreign language. Ulysses was an editing nightmare from the start.
Editorial controversy revisited the book twice—first in the 1980s when argument surrounded the unveiling of a new “corrected text” by Hans Walter Gabler (now known as “the Gabler edition”) that was published in 1986 by Vintage Books, a division of Random House. I discuss these editorial difficulties briefly in “A Critical History of Ulysses” later in this volume, noting that the Gabler edition enjoys wide use among Joyce critics, including the authors whose original essays appear here.
Ulysses is a modernist novel by the Irish writer James Joyce. Parts of it were first serialized in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920, and the entire work was published in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, Joyce’s fortieth birthday. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature and has been called “a demonstration and summation of the entire movement”.
