The Tradition of British Literature by Carter Colwell is an analysis of British literary development from the age of Chaucer through the twentieth century examining the major periods of English literature from four points of view: the work, the author, the audience, and the environment. The Tradition of British Literature by Carter Colwell that great tradition. Such a purpose is presumptuous, the pitfalls many. That scope itself, the scope of a subject covering such a span of time and such a wealth of creative writing, stretches the binding tight with extra pages. Such a book as this is apt to be either monumental or a tabular outline, either a score of volumes of sketchy summery of subject headings not means to be read but only referred to when time prevents reading

One of the great dates in the history of literature marks neither the birth of a great writer nor the first performance of a great play nor the creation of a new poetic form or prose masterpiece, but a marriage of languages. In 1066, Norman French, in the person of William the Conqueror and his attendant courtiers and warriors, took as unwilling bride the Anglo-Saxon of the former lords of England. On October 14 of that year, on the fields near Hastings, King Harold died in battle against the Norman invaders, and with him died the supremacy not only of the House of Wessex but also of their language. For the next three hundred years the Old English spoken by Harold and before him by Alfred and before him by Cynewulf slowly emerged from the paddocks and kitchens to which a Norman court contemptuously assigned it, mated with its sophisticated conqueror, and produced by long gestation one of the great artistic instruments of man, the English language.

For some six hundred and more years, the fertile invention of the British writer has explored the possibilities within that medium, first in a variety of Middle English dialects, and then—partly through the influence of one of its manipulators, Chaucer—through the Southeast Midlands dialect which has become the language you read this moment. Creative imagination, exploring possibilities for beauty or for grotesquerie, for elation and anguish, for action and meditation, for vulgarity and sublimity, has given us the tradition of British literature.
