Practical approaches to literary criticism collected by Richard Adams is in three parts: Novels by Robert Wilson, Plays by Linda Cookson and Poems by Phillip Robinson. This book is Literary criticism is Practical approaches to literary criticism: Novels by Robert Wilson. It is the study, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. The construction of the narrative, the plot, the way reality is created in the works of fiction, the fascination of the character study, and the use of language are usually discussed to show a novel’s artistic merits)
This book will encourage post-GCSE students to read and discuss extracts from novels in a sensitive perceptive way. It introduces them to the work of many of the major novelist and a couple of less well-known writers and so offers a taste of the great tradition of the English novel. It is hoped that students will gain an appreciation of some of the narrative and descriptive techniques that are most frequently employed by novelists and that this understanding will enable them to approach the analysis of prose extracts with clarity and confidence.
Although the treatment of entire novels is beyond the scope of this book, it will stimulate students to read further in the writings of the classical novelists and to be aware of how such matters as narrative stance, characterisation and situation are developed in the wider context of the whole novel. Finally, since a thematic organisation of the choice of extracts has been applied in the first four chapters, it is hoped that students will come to recognise the relevance of the study of novels to the real Concerns of our individual and corporate lives, to the deeper understanding of our relationships with ourselves, with each other and with the societies in which we live.
